Graphene Flagship

The Graphene Flagship initiative aims to strengthen Europe’s strategic independence in technologies relying on graphene and other 2D materials while maintaining the advantage Europe has gained through previous investments. The overall coordination of the Graphene Flagship initiative is ensured through a Coordination and Support Action (CSA), enabling the different activities to benefit from synergies in their scientific and technical work and operate more efficiently through shared services and support functions.

Challenges

Graphene Flagship, an international research centre at Chalmers University of Technology, was facing the next step in the development of its web platform. The existing website needed to be moved from a larger shared platform to a standalone solution in Umbraco while also modernising both the design and user experience to create a clearer and more accessible website for researchers, partners, and visitors worldwide.

As part of the project, there was also a need for custom-developed functionality for news flows, calendars, and event management. At the same time, the solution needed to be easy to manage for multiple users and project partners while operating reliably within Chalmers IT’s technical environment with high demands on performance, security, and deployment workflows.

The project was carried out together with the design agency Dahlbäck/Söderberg, who were responsible for the visual design, while we at Webmind handled the technical implementation and the underlying solution in Umbraco.

Solutions

We built the new website in Umbraco with a focus on flexibility, performance, and a smooth experience for both editors and visitors. The design was fully implemented in Umbraco using a custom-developed interface and unique widgets tailored to the organisation’s needs.

To make content management easier, we developed solutions for news, events, and calendar management where information can be administered and presented in a clear and structured way. As part of the project, we also set up customised deployment workflows towards Chalmers IT’s Azure environment to ensure a stable and secure publishing process. In addition, we conducted CMS training sessions for Graphene Flagship’s large editorial team to give them the right conditions to work independently with content and the ongoing development of the website.

Since the launch, we have continued the long-term collaboration with the customer through ongoing development, improvements, and optimisation of the platform. During 2026, we also carried out a smooth technical upgrade of Umbraco to ensure continued stability and a modern platform ready for future needs.

Working with Webmind on our website development has been an easy and collaborative process. The team does a great job translating our wishes into a system that is functional and easy to use on the back end while seamless and intuitive on the front end. The team is quick to understand the work we want done and to implement it in a way that surpasses our expectations
