Volvo Car Retail Solutions

VCRS is a company within the Volvo Group that develops intuitive digital solutions that are easy to use and make the Volvo retail flow both for users in the workshop, the car dealership and for the car customers who use the online services. Today, their solution is used by 10,000+ users and every year 240,000+ cars are sold with the support of their system that makes the entire ecosystem - of car manufacturers, companies that offers rental cars, financing, insurance, fuel and service agreements - connect digitally, for a seamless user experience.

Challenges

We have worked together with Volvo Car Retail Solutions for many years, helping them build several web solutions that support both their business and their retailers. When it was time to take the next step, a minor update was no longer sufficient. The technical foundation needed to be renewed and rebuilt from the ground up. The existing solution was based on older LTS versions of Umbraco, which limited the ability to develop new features at the pace required by the organization.

At the start of the project, Volvo Cars also launched a new visual identity, which placed higher demands on both design and user experience.

For many years, the portal had relied on Umbraco’s built-in authentication. As the organization evolved, the need to reduce manual handling of users and permissions became increasingly clear, along with the importance of creating a more scalable and efficient solution for the future. At the same time, there was a desire to further align authentication with Volvo’s internal systems to simplify administration and strengthen security.

Solutions

We rebuilt the solution from the ground up in Umbraco 17. With a custom architecture and no dependencies on legacy packages, Volvo Car Retail Solutions now has a cleaner and more future-proof technical foundation. This enables them to follow Umbraco’s roadmap moving forward without unnecessary obstacles during future major upgrades.

At the same time, the website received a clear visual upgrade aligned with Volvo Cars’ new visual identity. Structure, components, and design were unified into a more consistent expression that strengthens the brand and makes content more accessible.

A key part of the project was improving the security of dealer authentication. By integrating Volvo’s SSO solution with Umbraco, we ensured smooth and accurate access to the dealer portal. Roles and permissions are managed centrally within Volvo, reducing administration and strengthening security. We also enabled a more personalized experience for logged-in VCRS users through content tailored based on relevant data.

We at Volvo Car Retail Solutions decided to improve the customer experience on our website, which is their main source of product news and updates. Webmind helped us achieve this goal. Together we created a more personalized and relationship-building site with automatic login. At the same time, we made a face life with Volvo Cars' new visual guidelines. We are noticing increased traffic, more repeat visitors and a more well-informed customer. In our opinion, this has led to a clearly improved customer experience.
